Winners of the Kotinos Awards 2020.

The quality competition “Kotinos 2020”, awarding the best branded, standardized extra virgin olive oils has been carried out successfully at the Athens Marriott hotel in Athens, Greece, on Wednesday, July 22. The event was originally scheduled to take place on March 8, 2020 but was postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Organized by FILAIOS Club, the event was attended by many institutional representatives and executives from companies of the olive oil sector, while social distancing was strictly observed.
Mr Vangelis Divaris, former President of FILAIOS stated that we are entering a new era where the key word is “food”. “The EU has adopted a new strategy which puts an emphasis on the primary sector. It is a policy called ‘from farm to fork’. Olive oil as foodstuff has quality credentials and it is no mere chance that the health indications on its labels are currently multiplying. And because we are here today, to reward excellence in the field of olive oil, excellence means standards –and indeed very strict ones. We at FILAIOS have never made any discounts on what we call ‘quality’ olive oil and how we measure it.”

The “Kotinos” Quality Contest follows the procedures and criteria of the internationally recognized MARIO SOLINAS Competition held by the International Olive Council. At the same time, it stands out for the evaluation of the entries based on the intensity of their fruitiness and their classification in one of three categories of organoleptic characteristics—robust, medium and delicate—by the tester group of the SEVITEL Organoleptic Laboratory (accredited by the Hellenic Accreditation System). Finally, the selection of the winners for each of the three categories, FILAIOS Club has secured the participation of a group of internationally renowned jurors.
