Ouzo and Tsipouro

According to a breaking news bulletin from the Greek Federation of Spirits Producers, the European Commission has approved the registration of the Geographical Indications “Ouzo” and “Tsipouro/Tsikoudia” in the International Register of the Geneva Act of the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO).

Mr Nikos Kalogiannis, President of the Federation explains that “The approval was achieved after the concerted efforts of The Greek Federation of Spirits Producers and the Greek General Chemical State Laboratory. As a result, Greek products “Ouzo” and “Tsipouro/Tsikoudia” are now reinforcing their presence in international markets since:

They will be able to enjoy protection under the Lisbon Agreement for the Protection of Appellations of Origin and their International Registration, just as they are protected in the EU.

They give the EU an important negotiating advantage in talks with third countries on bilateral recognition of Geographical Indications. They will no longer be easily excluded from trade talks and agreements.”
